Chapter Twenty-Eight

The news of the car bombing of Mythological Services buildings all around the country stopped the lab. They stood watching the footage in much the same way that Sean had remembered doing in the days after the collapse. Even though he’d stood amongst the rubble the day it happened, it didn’t seem real that it had happened globally.

The car bombings had only happened in the US so far.

“Oh, fuck,” Sean breathed as he watched a silver lesser dragon fall out of the ruined building. That was Edra—it had to be. The camera followed him as he stumbled into someone. Jordan caught him as he collapsed. Edra was limp. He looked dead.

He’d better not be dead. Jordan loved him too much to lose him. And there he was on the screen, looking stricken and holding his mate. Once again, the media was feeding on their relationship.

Sean’s throat was tight.

The reporter kept talking, but Sean wasn’t listening. Updates from around the country scrolled across the bottom. How many were dead. The number to call if you know something. The number to call if loved ones were missing.

Troy didn’t work at Mytho Servo, but what if he’d been there? What if there’d been some other attack against mythos that wasn’t on the news, and he was hurt and…and he’d never said anything more than he liked him. How lame was that?

He couldn’t even admit that Troy was his boyfriend to Matt.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket, and even though he didn’t usually call Troy, though they texted several times a day, today he called. It went through to voice mail. Shit.

He swallowed, needing to say something. “Hey, it’s me. I just…I wanted to make sure you’re okay…call me back. Please?”

Janine stared at him. “Don’t you know him?”

She pointed at the screen where they were busy talking about Knight Tendric and the dragon rescue. The footage panned to a green dragon nearly as big as a bus sitting in the middle of the road as if it were helping by keeping traffic from getting close.

“Yes.” He should call Jordan, but he’d be busy with Edra. “I…”

He needed to do something, but he didn’t know what.

His phone rang in his hand. Troy’s name appeared on the screen. Relief swept through him without needing to hear his voice. He turned away from the group as he answered. “You’re okay?”

“Yeah…I saw the Knight…is he…?” Even Troy couldn’t say it.

“I don’t know.” A lump formed in Sean’s throat. “I haven’t heard.”

He didn’t want Jordan to lose his mate, not when he was so happy. He’d found someone who loved him. Sean needed to believe that it could happen to him. That this time would be different. He wanted to be different so that he didn’t push Troy away when all he wanted was to hold him.

“You’ll hear before me,” Troy said. Even though his voice was tight with concern, it was still soothing.

“I can ask my brothers…they might be there.” He turned back to the
